The Fair
Gardy was not easily pried from her study, so Demelza had to seek her out there when she came back from school bursting with news one afternoon the following week.
"It's the Corpus Christi Fair. Can we go, Gardy? Please?"
The answer was a firm "No!" Their Guardian did not often forbid them to do something, but she had no intention of taking them to the fair herself, and she did not think it suitable that they go by themselves. "It is far too rough down by the wharfside in the evening," she declared.
"How on earth would she know?" Demelza wondered out loud as the girls sat eating tea at the kitchen table. She could never imagine Gardy outside her ivory tower. "Honestly if anyone here is the Lady of Shalott, Esme, it's Gardy. But it's so unfair. Everyone I know at school is going. I'll tell you what. If we go after she's tucked us into bed, she'll never know. Let's sneak out. Not you of course Chloe, since you are far too young for such an adventure, but the rest of us."
"Certainly not," Esme said quickly. "I'm not disobeying Gardy."
"No, it is out of the question, Demelza," said Ashley. Chloe just sat looking at them wide-eyed, but for once did not argue.
Of course Demelza was not to be put off so easily. And in the end the disapproving but loyal Ashley would not let her go alone. |
Oh, how exciting it was. The noise of the music and the machinery, the shrieking of thrill-seekers on the rides, the colour, the lights! How could anyone bear to be borne up in the air so high one moment to plunge so precipitously earthwards the next?
"No, Demelza, I'm not going on that, or that!" Ashley said firmly.
Demelza persuaded her to try the Twister.
They both staggered off reeling after a sickening whoosh of a ride. Demelza had spent almost all her money on that one ride, much to Ashley's relief. Even though they could not afford to do much more, it was great fun to walk about looking.
'"I can't see anyone from school," Ashley remarked.
"Oh, look, aren't those girls in the sixth form?"
"I've never seen them before in my life."
"Hey, look over there. Isn't that . . . ?"
"Oh yes. Who's she with?"
(Author's note: The boy is an Asian BJD Luts Chiwoo.)
"I've never seen him before. Well, the fair is not too rough for our exalted head girl then. What would Gardy say to that?"
"You can't say anything, or she'll know we sneaked out. Don't be daft, Demelza. And keep back. She mustn't see us or she'll tell."
"That man keeps looking at us. Perhaps it's time to go home!"
Ting-a-ling!
The following day, the phone rings in the study.
Gardy leaves it for a while, but it is insistent. She picks it up.
"My dear," the dreaded voice of Lady P again, "I have the most wonderful surprise for your girls."
"Oh?"
"Yes. A little pet for them. I am going to send them my precious Lady Peekaboo. Lauren will bring her as soon as she has finished her exams."
"Oh no! Your new Papillon? I'm sure you don't want to part with her."
"Well, my dear, that's the point. I do. She's a little too boisterous for me. Not a bit like my poor dear Princess Pugkins. In actual fact I may as well tell you there was a most unfortunate incident in the park yesterday."
"Really?"
"Yes. I was walking down by the lake with her, and she suddenly raced away and started barking at one of my valuable ornamental birds, a goose, you know, that was browsing at the edge of the water. All of a sudden the goose flapped its wings and landed on the path. It was menacing poor Peekie who did not have the sense to back off so of course I had to come to the rescue. I picked up Peekie, and then ~ well suffice it to say I now have my arm in a sling and am covered in bruises. I'm not really up to giving Peekie the exercise she needs, whilst the children ~ they will probably run her ragged, don't you think? And it is so good for children to have a dog. I well remember my first, Tootsie . . .." Her voice droned on and on. Gardy looked at the clock in despair.
"All right," she said curtly. "But I must get on now."
"No, wait a minute. One other thing. Do you think it was wise to let the children go unsupervised to the Corpus Christi Fair?"

Note from Nancy Lee about Jen's doll stories:
Jen's dolls go into each setting of the story, in real life! No Photoshop tricks or faux backgrounds! Jen likes the challenge of taking the dolls out into Cornwall, where the scenes and emotions of the stories become real to her as an author.
