The Arrival of Abby

The attentive reader will have noticed a new character has crept into the story. Here is how it happened. After a hot morning of baking the girls are sitting outside on the rug in their favorite spot under the apple trees. Gardy has expressly asked them to stay home this afternoon, but they have no idea what is in store for them.
|
"This papillon pup has come to live with you," said Lauren, setting it into Demelza's arms. "See that you look after her well."
"For us? Oh, I can't believe it! It is a dream come true."
"Oh Demelza, it IS. It's your wish!" Chloe whispered, unable to speak it out loud.

But Demelza has something else on her mind.
"I'm sorry to have to ask this, Lauren, but did you tell on us? About seeing us at the fair?"
Lauren laughed wryly.
|
"No, I didn't, as it happens. But I know who did. He dropped me in it too."
"Oh, who was it?"
"Granny's gamekeeper, Obadiah Bunting. He spotted both of us. Did you get into trouble? I had a blazing row with Granny about it."
Demelza thought about this and suddenly began to see Lauren in a new light.

Of course the children wanted to know all about their new puppy. They learned that she was a papillon, which Lauren explained was the French word for butterfly; that her breed was named because of the wing-like ears. She told them how Lady Polkinghorne had found her unmanageable and had decided that the children would enjoy her more.
"So you know what you are in for!"
"But she is being very good!" exclaimed Ashley. "What's her name?"
"She's Lady Peekaboo!"
Demelza gave a groan. "Oh no she isn't. She cannot possibly have such a silly name."
"Well that is up to you. Just make sure she doesn't go near any geese." Lauren's mouth twitched as if she could barely repress an inappropriate smile.

After the exams on the Friday of the last full week of term the school hosted the Leavers Ball, referred to by most people as "the Prom". Lauren's partner was Jack Killigrew, the grandson of an old friend of Lady P's. Lauren's father laughingly calls him "the suitable boy."

Jen's dolls go into each setting of the story, in real life! No Photoshop tricks or faux backgrounds! Jen likes the challenge of taking the dolls out into Cornwall, where the scenes and emotions of the stories become real to her as an author.
