Memories shared by my patron about her younger sister, Nan
A Beloved Little Sister of my patron
When Nan was born, her mother was working as a teacher for a Nursery School (a school for preschool children). Nan was a pale blond, with blueberry eyes and hair like corn silk that slipped out of her elephant-ear pigtails. As the baby in the family, she had a sweet disposition and sunny smile. Nan just loved kittens and cats.
She became a great reader before age five. She would take Jo-Ann's Archie & Veronica comic books, squirrel herself away in a corner and devour them. At first we thought she was only looking at the pictures, but then discovered she had learned to read whenever her sister Jo-Ann, who was ten years older, was reading to her. Thereafter, whenever Jo-Ann had money from allowance money or chores, she would buy Nan stacks of comic books - Little Lulu, Dot, Casper the Friendly Ghost - sometimes as many as ten books at a time. Nan, about age five by then, was delighted and treasured the comics.
Nan still has glorious blue eyes. She loves to quill and work with paper arts.

I wrote to my patron:
This fun project is "close to home" for me, as I shared the same name and was also born in 1957. Nancy (Nan) must have been a popular name that year! Peter Pan collars were well liked, too. I remember wearing crinoline slips that made my above-the-knees skirts flair out. They itched my legs during church services.
Our mothers may have liked each other, since Nan's mom taught nursery school and my mom had a daycare in our home for several years. My mother had some old school desks and a freestanding chalkboard. I, being the oldest and the bossiest, was often the pretend teacher. I hope I was a kind teacher, not just a bossy one.
