NEWS FROM NANCY

August 2008

Dear Readers,

Please scroll down the page to see my Newest Art.
This page may load slowly on your computer since it has many image links.

Happily, I have been creating new oil miniatures at the request of Lewis Art Gallery. While most will go to the gallery (shown lower on this web page), I am going to offer the ones of charming children (with animals) for sale on eBay in August 2008. So far the animals include a hen, cats, a Great Dane, & a cockatiel bird. This new series, which is dear to me, will be named Children of My Heart.
Note: I was away from home for almost two weeks, until August 2nd, helping with my grandfather’s hospice care and funeral. This fine gentleman passed away at age 96, preceded in death by his wife of sixty-three years, my grandmother Dolores.

A Debut!

Coming soon, one a week: The eBay auctions will begin on Thursdays, last for ten days, and end on Sunday evenings.

UNIQUE . . . 5x7 Original Oil Paintings of Children
UNIQUE . . . OOAK Repainted (Reborn) Kish Dolls

2008 5x7 original oil painting by Nancy Lee Moran of a child holding a hen, colors of green, gold, violet brown. Inspiration: The child’s face and hair are from my imagination. Her homestead dress colors came from an original dress on a 1865 German china-head doll in the The Ultimate Doll Book by Caroline Goodfellow, page 47. The girl is holding her favorite hen, a dark Brahma. Brahma chickens first came from the area of Brahmaputra India, where they were known as Gray Chittagongs. They may have been related to Jungle Fowl and the Cochin. These large chickens (more than eight pounds each) are gentle and quiet, making good pets that even like to be hugged. They have fancy feathers (fluffy on legs too!) that make them hardy in cold weather.

2008 5x7 original oil painting titled Zeus & Lainey by Nancy Lee Moran of a baby with a Great Dane dog outdoors, colors of green, gold golden yellow, violet brown. Inspiration: In September 2002 I (Nancy Lee Moran) took this photo of Lainey, age eight months, with Zeus, the family’s Great Dane. Both had discovered a speck of interest in the grass. I like to paint contrasts. Here the art has contrast of the wee baby and the gentle giant dog. It also has contrast of delicate skin coloring with the strong black & white spots. When I took the photos, an hour before sunset, I found the slanting light beautiful, especially the diagonal sun rays on the grass under the low tree. I created the baby's spotted hat from my imagination.

Brand-new Helen Kish doll, 8
eBay doll auction August 7-17th
Kish Avery, Riley's friend
repainted as "Viola"

A surprise is coming, also to be for sale on eBay. Just for fun, I am combining my love of artist dolls with my love for painting. On a few dolls by American artist Helen Kish, I have removed the factory-decal paint and painted new faces, as finely as I do for my commissioned portraits of children on canvas. Marsha of Hankie Couture eBay-fame has designed and sewn an unique dress for each doll. It has been a joy to paint upon the lovely contours of the doll sculpts, to give each doll her own personality and spirit. It has been a joy to collaborate with fabric artist Marsha.

Laura's Trip: My doll Laura had some excitement in her life recently. While in California for her dress fitting, Laura got to model dresses for other auctions by Marsha of Hankie Couture. It was fun! See eBay seller name hankiecouture to purchase the other dresses.

While I long to sculpt a doll myself, my art focus has always been on painting instead of sculpting. I admire sculptors greatly, both those who create dolls and those who create bronzes. I especially like the gentle facial sculpts of doll artists Helen Kish and Heloise. I will be offering the following repainted Kish dolls: Riley, Riley's friend Avery, and Four Seasons. If you have friends who collect dolls, please tell them. The dolls and miniature oil paintings of children would make delightful gifts.

Here is a link to an eBay guide I wrote on August 4th about my repainted dolls, which has PICTURES of a doll before and after repainting.

Photo of Nancy Lee Moran by Lynell Morgan, with Nancy's art in the background, Till the Kids Come Home
Originally a registered nurse, Nancy hopes the compassion of that healing profession is expressed in her art.

Nancy maintains a constant reservation list, with her art found in nine states. Some of her paintings are represented by Lewis Art Gallery in Omaha, Nebraska. Please scroll down the page to see art at the gallery.

In 1994, she had a solo art show at the Nebraska Governor's Mansion. The Omaha Symphony ASID Interior Designer Showhouses displayed her portraits in 1998, 1999, and 2000. Ducks Unlimited requested art of country children (not of ducks!) to make limited edition regional prints in 1998 and 2000. Nancy attended the 2001 National Convention of American Society of Portrait Artists at the Metropolitan Art Museum in New York City. Her art has been featured in the magazine Nebraska Life.

2008 7x5 oil painting titled Friends, Old & New (Dolls & Bears) by Nancy Lee Moran from Moran's own reference photo taken in June 2004 at her home. Inspiration: I (Nancy Lee) found the Americana colors appealing: red, golden brown, dark blue. The bears, apple, wood blocks and enamelware bowl gave me nostalgic feelings. When I was young, my sister and I often played on a swing of similar design to this one, in our woodland backyard. The swing became a sailing ship one day, a picnic place the next. Special thanks to our town antique shop for loaning me the vintage wood doll swing. The yarn ball was a long crocheted chain made by my son during grade school.

2008 7x5 oil painting titled Berries on Stones by Nancy Lee Moran in colors of brown, red, green, violet, golden-yellow. Inspiration: I (Nancy Lee) like the red berries of a branch of Sargent Viburnum. I have put similar berry branches into three large paintings (A Welcome Home, May We Abide, and Rooster Vane). In October 2004 I wandered in a friend’s garden, where I picked a twig of berries. I draped it over these granite stones, which had a lovely violet-gray color. I liked how the delicate berries and leaves, soon to die, rested on the ancient rocks. Natural History has always fascinated me, how brief and fragile life is, yet how robust life has been over eons. The golden leaf added color and a sense of autumn.

2008 24x18 inches oil painting titled Abundance by Nancy Lee Moran from Nancy's own reference photo. Inspiration: I (Nancy Lee) would love to sit on a lawn blanket here, just rest in the shade beside the jovial flowers. Mary, who lives in my town, piled impatiens in her wheelbarrow and inside of nets on a tree trunk. I added the rabbit that lives in my own yard, some stones and grasses, and a pawpaw tree. Droopy pawpaw leaves make an enchanted-forest quality. Many such trees grow at Indian Cave State Park south of our town, becoming aspen-gold in autumn. Abundance art has colors of brown, red, yellow, green, violet, blue and gray.

2008 24x18 inches oil painting titled Water Music by Nancy Lee Moran from Nancy's own 2003 reference photo. Inspiration: I (Nancy Lee) have loved sparkling water since I was a baby. When I was a year old, my dad plopped me down in an icy mountain brook, where, far from being alarmed, I would have happily splashed until I became an ice cube. In 2003 I admired this fountain in Lanesboro, Minnesota. In 2008 I painted it in oil, adding a robin, a bluebird, and more flowers. It shows a place I would like to be, a girl who could have once been me. Water Music art has colors of blue, red, yellow, green, violet, lavender.

2008 7x5 oil painting titled Shadow Dance by Nancy Lee Moran in colors of brown, red, yellow, green, violet. Inspiration: These Angelique tulips bloomed in my own garden in 2008. I was fascinated by the strong shadows on the softly tilled soil. While I took one reference photo, I mixed all the paint colors in the garden from life observations and altered the flower colors to be less-pink and more-red.
