Family with children ages eight and six, a 30 x 24 inch oil portrait painted in 2005The room (for the painting) in the grand historical home had a formal, traditional design. The room had hardwood floors, oriental rugs in colors of red, burgundy and navy, and walls with silvery-sage and golden washes. Interior designer Marilyn Hansen of Omaha graciously gave me samples of the room fabrics. I looked through my back issues of Victoria and museum catalogs to get ideas for elegant props that would enhance the composition. Brass and carved wood seemed to suit the room.
I changed the color of the wife's tunic from ivory to burgundy and added the same color to the pattern of the tie and to the fruits. I echoed the color of daughter Sophie’s blue dress in the beveled chandelier drops on the candle and in the pattern of son Robert’s tie. I envisioned Jessica’s pure blue eyes as being the “color jewel” of the painting.
